Commander Smith escorted him to the infirmary. Doctor Amanda Swanson awaited him. The young half Romulan girl, D'Ral, sat on one of the beds out of ear shot as Logan entered. He was more well rested now for whatever that was worth. He still had no idea how to handle this so he treated it as any other ops with a hostile interrogation. "Doctor," he greeted her.
"Commanders," the older woman said. Her hair was whitening as her age was now betrayed by her hair. "I've run the tests again. The maternal and paternal markers line up. Other than recent malnourishment, she's healthy. Her attitude actually kind of reminds me of me when I was younger. I was finally able to get her name. D'Ral. I wouldn't recommend calling her that. What questions do you have?" She turned to Logan.
Logan steadied himself with his arms locked behind his back. He had a million questions but only a few were relevant right now. "I understand the DNA matches," he began, "what I do get is how this is possible. And save me the birds and the bees speech. There are supposed to be medical procedures that I underwent that were supposed to prevent this sort of thing."
"Those are not always a hundred percent accurate, even in this day in age. Conception is always possible unless ovaries and testes are permanently removed. As we are not in the business of castration, this can happen. If you're a numbers guy, it's like a one in ten thousand chance." The doctor laid out his odds. "If you like, we can run some tests to ensure the procedures were successfully completed."
Logan sighed. "As my Texan ancestors would say, that's like closing the barn door after the bull has escaped." He wasn't going to be assigned to any more ops, although he'd had more than his share of relations since then. "We can look it over anyway," he decided. "What else has she said other than her name? Did she say anything about how she escaped? What happened to her mother?"
"Nothing. She is not saying much of anything. I'll take some blood and you two can talk."
Logan nodded and slowly strolled in that direction. He hid what doubt and fear he had as best he could.
Coriana stood up from sitting on the bio bed next to D'Ral. "This is your daughter. D'Ral D'varo."
He nodded at Smith. His first look at her in person and he could see the resemblance to her mother, right down to the emotionless scowl. D'Ral stared straight ahead and did not acknowledge either of them as she was introduced to him. "Hello, D'Ral. My name is Logan Vance." She said nothing and continued staring. "I'm sure Commander Smith and several others have explained to you who I am and what the situation is." D'Ral remained stone faced. Logan looked over at Smith and motioned her off to one side.
Nodding, she moved over to where he motioned. "Yes?" She asked as he walked over to her and they met out of the young girl's earshot.
"I want to talk to her alone," he started. "There are too many people here. I think she feels outnumbered and overwhelmed. If it's one on one, maybe I can get her to open up a little. If she's anything like her mother, she'll probably try to out maneuver me and try to get information to escape. In the process, I can lead her down a path I want her to go. I'll also need quarters. Someplace she can stay by herself but also has room for me later. They'll be secured and guarded of course but if she asks to go anywhere, she is to have free access to the base as long as I accompany her." He had no idea if this would actually work but it was the only idea he had.
"Consider it done," she said smiling. "Give me an hour to make all the arrangements. In the meantime," she motioned for the two guards in the medical bay to step out. "I'll be outside if you need anything."
Logan nodded his thanks as Smith started to clear our that area of the infirmary. He turned his attention back to D'Ral. She seemed a bit confused by everyone clearing out. At least the first hurdle was out of the way. He'd gotten her to actually react to something.
