Personal History Amanda Vance was born D'Ral D'varo on Romulas in 2374. Her mother, Rhiana D'varo had believed that a Romulan operative S'Ten Sullan was the father of her child. When D'Ral was born, however, a DNA scan revealed she was half human. The truth that S'Ten had never really existed and was in fact a Federation spy shamed the entire D'varo family. This shame forced Rhiana and D'Ral into exile on a harsh planet in the Romulan star cluster.

As D'Ral grew up, her mother resented her for being living proof of her failure. Although she treated D'Ral poorly, Rhiana could never bring herself to physically harm her. D'Ral was raised and taught the traditions of the Romulan people and culture and told nothing of her human heritage. She learned these lessons well and despite her mistreatment, swore she would one day serve the Romulan Star Empire as her grandfather and mother had before her.

Despite this, eventually, the mistreatment drove her to run away so she could find her way to serve. She left only weeks before the Romulan Star went nova and wiped out the entire system. She was spared the death of many of the Romulan people, including her mother but was now a refugee.

She spent the next two months on a Federation relief vessel, crammed in with dozens of other refugees from her former homeworld until the arrived at Starbase 234. There she was introduced to a Federation Intelligence Agent by the name of Logan Vance. He introduced himself as her father.

He explained how he met her mother and what his mission had been. However, instead of being upset, she reacted with respect and admiration for her father. He had accomplished those goals that her mother has instilled in her as important. Not only this but while the Romulan Empire was now a shell of its former self, the Federation of which her human heritage was a large part, was now one of the most dominant cultures in the galaxy. They'd beaten not only the Romulans but the Borg and the Dominion. It was for these reasons D'Ral shunned her Romulan heritage and embraced her human one.

She demanded her father give her a human name and insisted on surgery to hide her Romulan features and enhance her human ones. She emersed herself in human history and culture. While some of it was alien there was a great deal she found was common in earth's history that related to her mother's teachings.

A fear of rejection, however, caused her to ask her father not to take her back to earth. Instead, they compromised and decided he would take an assignment on a starship. She remained with him during his assignment on the Hawking and came with him when he accepted the role of XO on the USS Andromeda.
