Time: 0230
Scene: Logan Vance's Office

It had been a nearly constant barrage of information since the supernova destroyed Romulus and much of the Romulan Star Empire. Logan had maybe a dozen hours of broken sleep during that time. The ops he'd been coordinating had been non-stop and if it hadn't been for his second forcing him to take a break now and then, he'd have gone straight through.

Right now he was stuck trying to catalogue the dead among Starfleet's agents that had been in the system. It had been a crippling blow. Some of their best had been lost and untold other had been stranded with no way to contact them. Refugees were pouring into Federation space causing a massive security risk and Starfleet Intelligence could not keep up. It didn't show any signs of slowing down either.

Coriana knocked lightly on the door frame. "Lieutenant Commander Vance?" She asked lightly. They all had been working too many hours. "Got a minute?"

Logan sighed and rubbed his bloodshot eyes, wondering what it was this time. More casualty reports? Another dozen refugee ships? "What it is, Commander Smith, you can leave it on the pile and I'll get to it as soon as I can." He was running on fumes.

"You're going to want to take a seat." What she had to say was going to be a shocker to anyone. As he took a seat, she maneuvered across from him and remained standing. "Of your many missions to Romulus, one wasn't as clean as we thought it was."

Logan was not quite tracking, which wasn't a surprise given his sleepless state. "Last I checked Romulus doesn't exist anymore, so it seems like whatever it is can wait. In case you haven't noticed, we're kinda in the middle of a crisis."

"I can see where she gets it from." She handed over the PADD. "One of the refugees is half Human half Romulan. Your Op in 73. She is not cooperating with our agents to gather information. We ran her DNA three times. There is no denying it. You're a father of a thirteen almost fourteen year old. Her mother is a D'varo."

He stared back at her with an intensity that could have bore a hole into her head. "I'm sorry, what part of you thinks that now is a good time for a joke? Or a prank?" he growled back at her. He stood up and leaned over the desk. He didn't care he was dealing with a higher ranked officer, he didn't have time for this. "I get that I have a reputation and that some of you either resent it or get your jollies from giving me shit over it but I'm a little busy and right now I don't have time for it. So come back when I've had some sleep."

"There is no sleep for us and you know that.
She won't talk to any of our agents. We were actually hoping that you might be able to get her to talk. We know her grandfather is Lihran D'varo and her mother is Rhiana D'varo from the genetic samples you retrieved on your mission on 73. At the end of the report, you'll find your orders to investigate her. She wont give us her name and our network is shattered. We leave for Starbase 234 in fifteen minutes," Coriana stated calmly.

Logan was still in a state of disbelief as he started to look over the PADD. Everything looked officially. It was even signed by Admiral Saunders herself. It was then he realized she wasn't kidding. He went from being angry to shell shocked. "What…? How…?" He had no idea how to deal with this situation. How to deal with a child. His child.

He read over the orders again. He was to take custody of the child at Starbase 234 and make arrangements for her so she wouldn't take up valuable resources from other refugees. If she could provide any actionable intel, he was to pass it on to Starfleet Intelligence. As far as they were concerned, this was his only assignment for the immediate future. "There could not be a worse possible time for this. What exactly do they expect me to do?"

"Your job. Gather intelligence as you can and enjoy having a family you didn't know you had. She's lost everything and gained something she didn't know she had. Having a child can change things. You need time to figure out your new normal. I've been the only person that has been able to get this far with her. Hopefully you have better luck where the rest of us have failed." She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear.

He rubbed his eyes again, trying to take it all in. He'd have plenty of time to get rested on the way there. Plenty of time to figure out how to handle this or figure a way out of it. It would be a two day trip, even at high warp. "All right fine… I just need my bug out bag. How are we getting there?"

"Runabout is on landing pad delta two. We can leave as soon as you grab your bag. I'll meet you at the runabout so you can have time to yourself." She smiled trying to ease the difficult situation.

He nodded and watched as she left. Still trying to piece this all together, he couldn't help but wonder if not for this disaster would he have ever known? And now that he did, how was he going to raise a child? He didn't know the first thing about kids. The closest he'd gotten to them were the cadets at the Academy and Cadet Kacy's siblings

All he could think about was how screwed this kid was. How screwed both of them were.
