1940 - Deal

“Tu viens, dépêche-toi! Jéanne!”

Jéanne walked out of the farm house when she heard her name called and looked to see two of the local farmers with a man in a wheelbarrow. “Qu'Est-ce que c'est?” she asked them as they approached.

The other farmer spoke. “Les autres sont morts; il est vivant. À peine”

“Vous venez!” she went down the few steps and pressed her fingers against his wrist. He was alive, but circling. She helped the two farmers lift him into the house. “L'eau,” she asked the one while she and the other lifted him onto the white solid island in the kitchen. She quickly went to the other room and pulled out her medical kit. As she volunteered in the Red Cross, she had managed to sneak some extra supplies from time to time to make sure that she had enough for when someone local needed help. That and she was trying to create a stockpile for when the Résistance was formed. This was one of those times that she didn’t have a chance to ask questions.

She cut open his pants around his leg wound. “Il a touché une artère. Des pansements! Tu te dépêches!!” As he was in and out of it, she knew she didn’t have much time. She opened his mouth and poured whiskey straight in, helping him drink it as her other hand held what packing she had in place on the wound. As he started to slip unconscious, she dug through the wound with the little candle light that she had and found the nicked artery and deftly stitched it closed. Then she removed the bullet fragments from around the femur near his left knee pulling all the pieces out. Just as she was about to pack the one wound, something clamoured to the floor.

She looked over at it instantly recognizing that brass color. Dread washed over her as she realized she wasn't the only one. Her heart skipped a beat or three as it felt like it rose to her throat excited she might just be able to go home. Before one of the farmers came back in, she reached down and grabbed the shattered piece of metal off the worn wood floor. Her eyes went to his right hand. She reached forwards and grabbed the small phaser from his right hand. “Qui es-tu?” she murmured. She slipped the communicator into her pocket, and then the phaser under his leg. She faced towards the door and heard something but wasn’t sure exactly what she heard.

She felt the hairs on the back of her neck rise. She quickly looked down to the man’s eyes that were now slowly starting to come open. “What time?” she whispered.

He mumbled something in audible.

She heard another noise again; this time an audible thump. Her left hand went to the phaser that she had hid behind his body, while her right hand held a fist full of fabric on his chest. That’s when she heard the bullets ring out above her head. Instinctively she dropped and pulled the man off the island surface down with her. Switching the phaser between hands, she peered around the edge of the island and saw one with a phaser and the other with a long soldier’s rifle. When they saw her, they fired in her direction.

She crawled to the other side, and leaned out firing at the one hitting him in the shoulder. He fell to the floor, and the other started to shoot the rifle again. She waited for a reprieve for him to reload and then fired the phaser. It had been so long since she had shot one, that she missed him just barely. He aimed at her to fire, and she ducked back behind the island again. Then she heard it jam. A smirk crossed her lips as she leaned out and shot again, this time, making purchase. She slowly looked out to make sure there was no one else there.

After confirming that they were alone, she grabbed the communicator out of her pocket and looked down at the man she had saved with her as he seemed to be coming out of it. “What time?” she pleaded patting his face to help keep him conscious.

Logan blinked twice, trying to regain some sense of his situation. He looked up at the woman who was leaning over him and centered his vision. She looked familiar but he couldn't place where. "Time…? I don't understand," he shook his head. It looked to be dark outside, so he assumed it was sometime in the evening but beyond that he had no idea.

She showed him the communicator and looked at him again. “What year?” she asked this time.

He was still confused, but awake enough now to realize what she was asking. "2385," he replied. He tried to sit up, but the pain in his hip stopped him. "Where the hell am I?" he wanted to know.

When she heard the 2385, her excitement started to show on her face. This meant that if he wasn’t stranded back in time with her, then she could go home. “Do you have a ship?” she asked trying to help him up to a seated position.

When she sat him up, he got a better look at her and it suddenly clicked from where he'd recognized her. It was the woman in the picture. The woman he'd been standing with. "Not so fast… just who the hell are you and how do you know what any of this is?" he insisted, trying to grab the phaser back.

“Jéanne-Thérèse Marsol, Ensign. Head nurse on the USS Coleman. There was an accident about eight years prior to your time that's stranded me for five years. Can you get me home?” she asked, handing him back the broken communicator, but keeping his phaser for now. “I hope you’re one of the good guys, cause those two sure wanted you dead,” she stated as an afterthought in a thick French accent.

"Yeah… apparently, this whole thing was a setup," he grimaced. "And yes, there's a runabout in orbit, assuming they've left it there. But with my communicator destroyed, I don't have a way to get to it. So unless you've got a way to get around that issue, that's a non-starter."

She set the phaser on the edge of the counter behind her, and finished packing the wound. She grabbed the suture scissors and putting a couple of stitches to hold it. “It will hold for a couple of days. With a proper medical kit I can make it look like it was never there. You might get some lingering pain from the bullet wound, though. It’ll take time for the nerves to heal.”

She finished and cut the rest of the excess wire off. “Stay here,” she said as she went to look for some more bandages and get her bag. Digging around her bag as she walked back into the room, her hand brought out a roll to wrap around his leg. Kneeling back down in front of him, she opened her hand and showed him her own communicator. “It’s the only thing I have left besides my pip. Everything else, I destroyed. It was the last hope I had of maybe someone coming for me.” She offered it to him. “Can you get me home?” she asked.

He took the communicator and activated it. He immediately was able to connect to the shuttle but then promptly turned it off. As long as it was active, the other Section 31 members could track them. "Yes, I can get you home but I have a job to do here first," he told her. "I came here to stop other time travelers and if I leave without doing that, the future we go back to won't be anything we recognize. So you help me and I'll help you. Deal?"

“Deal,” she smiled and handed him his phaser back. She allowed him to keep his broken communicator and her communicator as well. She just hoped that he wasn’t going to leave her behind.
