Agent Logan Vance sat in the back of the runabout USS Missouri still trying to make heads or tails of his orders. In twelve years of being an agent for Starfleet Intelligence, he'd never been asked to actually time travel… on purpose. Time travel is what other people did on accident and had to file reports to the Time Bureau for the rest of their natural life. At least that's how it seemed to be from the few time travelers he'd encountered.

Apparently, though rare, this was one of those occasions that time travel had been sanctioned by Starfleet. 'To correct a temporal imbalance,' Admiral Novak had said. Logan wasn't sure what that meant except that someone had gone back in time against the temporal prime directive and his team needed to stop them. One way or another.

"Didn't Novak say he had some ancestor that served in World War II?" Agent Hatfield asked.

"Yeah, some guy named Barbarent," Agent Silva replied. "Maybe we make a stop and see what happens if we knock the shit out of him," he continued with a laugh.

"Yeah and then you come back to a completely different future where Klingons run the Federation all because you didn't like some hard ass Admiral," Hatfield warned him.

Sliva shrugged. "Worth it."

Logan rolled his eyes and remained quiet. There wouldn't be time for any of that anyway. They were simply going to pop into 1940 a few days before the time travelers were to arrive, wait, pick them up and head home. No threat to the timeline, no altering history. He would just have to keep from stepping on any butterflies.

"This is your first visit to the past, right, Vance?" Hatfield asked.

"Hopefully my last," Logan replied. "All this shit makes me nervous."

"Is it the time travel or that pasting you took a few months back?" Silva jabbed him.

Logan shot him a death glance. The fact that his mission had been compromised and he could have been killed if not for Adlyn Rowley was not something he was ready to joke about. "Let's just get this done."

Silva scoffed. "Whatever."

Logan tried to ignore him but something felt off about both of these guys. He just couldn't put his finger on it.

Hatfield finished the preflight. "This is the Missouri to Starbase 24. We are ready to depart. Batten down the hatches, we will be executing Kirk maneuver in five minutes. We'll see you five minutes after that."

=/\=Acknowledged, Missouri. You are cleared to depart. Happy hunting.=/\=

Missouri took off and readied for the officially named 'Slingshot Maneuver' first performed by Captain Kirk in 2267. Since then, only a few knew how to perform it reliably and Hatfield was one of those few.

"Hang onto your butts," Hatfield warned them as he kicked the engines up to full.
