Personality & Traits

General Overview Ridiculously confident to the point of approaching arrogance, Jacob not only knows his capabilities, he also knows his own limits, not that the latter will keep him from pushing to achieve any goal. Charismatic, he has a leadership persona that people tend to connect with and while he’s far from perfect he owns his mistakes and who he is in general. Relationships are easy so long as they aren’t too intimate and he has more ‘friends’ than anyone would know what to do with. In spite of that there is a private side to the man that tends to stay hidden. Jacob only lets people in so far though fortunately for most people in his life it’s far enough.

Loss is his greatest fear and Jacob still doesn’t handle death all that well. He has a tendency to bury such things as deep as possible and run. At least now (thanks to a few strategic people in his life) he can acknowledge the fact that he does so and it’s not entirely in his best interest. Maybe someday he can figure out a way to stop. It’s definitely a work in progress.

Highly intellectual and observant, he’s rather skilled at manipulating people when he feels the need and not always for the best. He’s been called out for such things by other strong personalities but it’s a habit that’s hard to break. Jacob just naturally wants to take care of Jacob but that doesn’t mean he’s entirely selfish. He’d lay his life down for any member of his crew if it was called for and would do so without a second thought but then he’s always been fearless if not reckless not to mention a bit of an adrenaline junkie.

He’s been hailed as one of the best tactical fighter pilots in all of Starfleet and with good reason. In the cockpit, Jacob is a natural. LtCmdr Stone once said about him: “Not only is he an instinctive pilot, but he’s got a great sense of situational awareness.”

Suffers from insomnia and has a natural sleep cycle of 5 hours. A bit on the hyperactive side finds it difficult to sit still and will often have one knee bouncing beneath the table when behind a desk, sitting at a briefing, or sitting down to eat. His quarters are immaculate but not from any sort of OCD need of organization and cleanliness but rather from an inability to sit still for long. It’s nothing for him to be cleaning quarters at three in the morning... (until his roommates shove him out the door so they can sleep)

Oddly to most, sitting in the cockpit or at helm for hours is probably the stillest one will see Jacob with the exception of the graceful movements of his fingers over the console. He has always been able to feel the movement of ships through space no matter their size or shape and with his full awareness captured he’s finally at peace.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths: Natural ability with all forms of transportation (especially flight related), leadership, Strategic planning, highly observant, quick thinking, courageous under fire, confident in the cockpit, strong charisma, intense value of all life

Weaknesses: Not good with intimate relationships, tendency to fall to the temptation of manipulating others, long fuse but explosive temper, hyperactive tendencies, not good with loss/grief,

Empath: As a half Betazoid, Jack can read people's emotions but has no telepathic ability except when interacting with telepaths. He came into his abilities at the age of eleven and for three years was trained by his mother on how to build "walls" between himself and others. Occasionally strong emotions slip through the barrier or the "walls" weaken a bit when he's tired. Most people would forget his empathic nature if it weren't for the eyes.
Ambitions To leave his mark on Starfleet and be remembered long after he's gone.
Hobbies & Interests Flight - Jacob lives and breathes flight. He has proven himself on many different challenging aerial and atmospheric flight simulations and has a mind for figuring out alien spacecraft and prides himself on being able to fly anything from the advanced down to the "archaic" WW1 fighter planes.

Piano - Jacob plays the piano. It started out as a therapy exercise with one of his counselors back in his Academy days. It served as an outlet for action during times when action wasn't called for, like during sleepless hours in quarters. He's also found it to be a great emotional outlet and owns his own folding keyboard.

Sports/Games - Jacob doesn't do well sitting idle without something to capture his attention. Whether it's hoverball, parrises squares, springball, kal-toh, velocity, or even 3-D chess, he enjoys playing.

Adventure - Whether it be of the holodeck variety or an actual planetside visit, Jacob enjoys new scenery and new experiences of all kinds. He's not the spectator type and prefers to be knee deep in everything and very much hands on.

Personal History Jacob Jordan Devine was born on Starbase 211, out in the deep reaches of space along the Cardassian Border. The base was home to the Blue Devil Fighter Squadron led by Jacob’s father, Commander PJ “Ghost” Devine. SB 211, was considered a dangerous tour and many of the dependents were transferred back to Earth during the years of the Dominion War (2373-2375). Jacob’s mother, Elania, was unfortunately too ill to travel outside of stasis at that time and adamantly refused to be put into stasis. Jacob was 13-15 during the war and his parents decided to stay put as did a handful of other families. Jacob’s mother passed a year into the Dominion War and his father was gone a lot. If it weren’t for his group of friends (Orion, Myvelle, Arthur, Jenn, and Dallas) he wouldn’t have known what to do. Eventually the Dominion War ended and all the families returned to SB211. It seemed everything had settled back into peace and stability. Jacob and his father were bonding over their loss, growing closer every day. Philip shared his knowledge of and passion for fighters and flew them in the base holodeck simulators with Jacob on a daily basis. As a young teen, flying was Jacob’s safe zone, his place of peace and freedom. Not matter how complicated life seemed if he could just get up above it all he felt so much better.

In 2376, Starbase 211, was attacked by the Luminai. Philip’s wing unit deployed to defend the base but they were overpowered and SB211 was ultimately destroyed. The USS Achilles, was called in to rescue any survivors in the wake of the destruction and collected countless escape pods from the field of wreckage. The base’s entire squadron wing was lost, Jacob’s father among them. Most of the survivors of SB 211, were women and Children, Jacob and his friends among them with the exception of Jennifer ‘Jenn’ Murdock who stayed behind to wait for help with her elderly grandmother and two small sisters. Jacob took the loss hard. He was 16 years old and the oldest of all the surviving children, many of them now orphaned like he was.

The USS Achilles was assigned the duty to take the survivors back to Earth and Jacob was among them. Enroute he daringly hijacked an F180 fighter from the hangar bay (intent on hunting the Luminai and making them pay) only to be pursued by the Achilles’ pilots. During that pursuit the ship was set upon by a Luminai Destroyer. It’s highly debated whether Jacob’s hijacking saved lives due to the squadron already being deployed when the attack happened or if he merely cost more in the form of the pilots who tried dutifully to protect him while they battled the enemy. Jacob himself got involved in the battle, the youngest fighter pilot to have ever fought in combat (even if illegally).

LtCmdr Ian Pierre Freely saw talent in Jacob, and in spite of the boy’s reckless behavior felt he deserved a second chance and someone to help him properly develop. He took legal guardianship of Jacob once the Achilles reached Earth and Jacob stayed on the ship as did a few of his other friends who were also ‘adopted’ by other members of the crew. During another battle some time later Freely was injured and went into a coma. It was uncertain as to whether he would live and Jacob once again tried to ‘hijack’ a fighter and escape his emotions. Only, the squadron was ready for him the second time. He was not only unsuccessful but thrown into the brig for a time.

The Achilles replacement squadron commander realized that while Jacob had potential he was highly undisciplined and stepped in to take up where Freely left off as did the whole of the squadron. Over time Jacob integrated into life aboard the Achilles with his new family. He was allowed to learn from the pilots under their strict guidance providing he signed on for Starfleet Academy courses and made an effort to become a pilot the right way. Jacob accepted the conditions and applied himself only to have his callsign determined for him by the squadron. He was now affectionately and somewhat jokingly referred to as “Hijack” due to his two attempts on stealing their F180s. Inevitably the callsign led to a shortened form of “Jack” which he grew accustomed to being called.

After two years of extension courses while learning “hands on” aboard the USS Achilles, Jacob transferred to Starfleet Academy as a Cadet in the 3rd year. He spent 2 years with the Academy and graduated in 2382, with honors. Many of the officers assigned to the USS Achilles were there to see him graduate.

From the Academy, Jacob joined his Cadet Cruise as an Ensign due to his extensive experience. He stayed with the USS Reagan for a year and was promoted to LTJG and transferred to the USS Shanouk where he spent a year in the position of fighter pilot before being removed to join Special Operations. He served in that capacity for a year (his service was redacted from his records) before joining the USS Daemon, one of the last Akira Class Carriers to retain a squadron of fighters on board. Their missions took them deep into the Delta Quadrant. His two years on the USS Daemon proved him to be an exceptional pilot with leadership abilities. Near the end of his tour, his flight was delegated to disable a battery of Qastigan Mines to allow for safe passage of a Nolian Freighter. During the course of the mission run, the flight leader’s fighter was taken out by the triggering of one of the mines leaving the small unit of fighters without a leader. Jacob immediately stepped in and saw the mission to its end. For his leadership in action he was given the opportunity to step into the position of Flight Leader on the USS Winlock. Jacob accepted, gathered his things, and transferred. It was there that he would be paired with a TSO by the name of Gavin "Zoomie" Pierre and assigned to a Kaneda Class Fighter. Following three years of service on the Winlock, he was offered an opening on the USS Andromeda as Squadron Leader and a promotion to LTC. Jacob immediately accepted the opportunity and made the transit to the USS Andromeda by the quickest means available, his TSO following.
