| Personal History | Elara Genevieve Evander was born on August 11th to Tucker and Gwendolyn Evander, the youngest of their two children. Growing up, she was very much attached to her mother's hip when she could be, curious about the world through science while her older brother (Leopold) was more interested in tinkering like their father. Born on Starbase 211, the Evanders lived there and were apart of a great community there, the kids both having long term friends from when they were babies. The Evanders lived there until right after Elara's 9th birthday when they ended up being reassigned to the USS Mazerine (a Nebula class starship). Elara found life aboard a starship vastly different than that of a starbase, though there was a good amount of children, there weren't as many as she was used to and she felt like the variety of species aboard was vastly limited as well. She enjoyed the variety of cultures and families that she was so used to. Life was not nearly as eventful on the Mazerine and when Leopold was sixteen, he started at the Academy in 2370. He had seemed more than ready to leave, though Elara hated being left behind. She had wanted the adventure that she felt her older brother was going to get in going to Earth. When the Dominion War broke out, the Mazerine's crew had been assured that they would make the journey to Earth to drop off civilians several times but always was redirected towards the front lines. Though they'd been given the opportunity to send Elara to Earth on a transport ship at one point, her parents had worried about sending her alone. At the Battle of Ricktor Prime, the Mazerine started separation in order to get the bulk of the civilians to safety when the fleet came under attack. Tucker was on the stardrive separated section of the Mazerine when it was destroyed by the Dominion. Though Gwendolyn was on the saucer section in the science lab, she too died, when the Dominion fired on the saucer section and took out and severely damaged a portion of the saucer. The death of her father was something that Elara grieved over immediately upon learning of the loss of the stardrive, however she didn't realize that her mother had been lost as well until they were well on their way back to Earth with so many injured, trapped, and dead to tend to and identify. At seventeen, Elara found her world turned upside down. Even though she had a brother and a grandfather, she felt very alone in the world. Following the loss of her parents, she was taken to Earth while arrangements could be made. Leo had been dispatched to a ship, though not on the front lines, Elara didn't feel like it was right to expect him to take care of her. Though only a few years younger than Leo, she didn't want to feel a burden to him. She wanted him to be able to flourish without her mourning, processing, and trying desperately to make sense of everything (not just the loss of her parents). Though Otis Evander was being reassigned to San Francisco, he persuaded Elara to apply to the Academy. With the war on, the Academy wasn't observing the normal protocol and Elara found herself being accepted into the Academy and having to make it her new home. With everything going on, her head was a whirl and she ended up putting her sole focus on life at the Academy and getting through those four years. At the Academy, Elara decided to go with planetary sciences (atmospheric science, environmental science, geophysics, botany, geology, marine science) as her major. She'd taken the time to explore into each area just so that she was sure that it was the right fit and not just her following in her mother's footsteps because that had really been all she'd known. Being at the Academy, nearly everyone there had been impacted by the horrors of the Dominion War in some form. Though the war ended while she was at the Academy, the effects were long lasting. Friends were made easier than she'd expected and she'd started to feel more at home possibly because it really was the only home she had at the time. She graduated at the top of her class and moved on to take her cadet cruise on the USS Nobel. Maybe it was because she'd done a lot of growing, but she felt a lot closer to Leo after being assigned to a vessel even though they were apart. They talked more than they ever had while she was in the Academy or while he'd been there. It was a nice reconnect and regrounding to her family that she'd felt like she'd lost. As Elara was transferred from ship to ship over the years, she and Leo tried to make time for each other with their leave time. Being assigned to the Noether Science Station had been a great opportunity and experience for Elara. It was science projects at all times. There were group projects and individual projects and for the most part, it was just a huge science sandbox that they got to play in. However, all of that intense science got to be a bit much (and so much of the same type of people) and Elara was more than happy to be reassigned back to a ship again. On the USS Sumner, she was assigned as assistant chief science officer, something that came as a bit of a surprise but she took it as an honor and even more of a reason to prove herself. Her focus and dedication only increased with her new position, wanting to prove the higher ups that they'd been right to grant her such a position. After some time, Elara was transferred to the USS Andromeda and this time given the position of chief science officer. |
